Documented Life Project 2016: January Week 3

I filmed my second video in my Documented Life Project for week 3 of January.  Even though I’m running a little bit behind with the weekly prompts, I’m keeping the “unplanner” part up to date.  I’m not using the book as a planner but rather as a place to journal little bits about what’s happening on specific days.  Some days stay empty and I try to fill those with magazine images to take up the white space.

This page uses a few collage elements such as book pages, a magazine image, die cut flowers and a “quote”.  I enjoy watching other collage artists on YouTube and I wanted to practice putting together a page using pictures from magazines.  Sometimes it takes the pressure off to combine other people’s images than to create them yourself.

Supplies are listed below as well as some photos of the finished page.  Thanks for watching and please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already done so!

#LoveFallArt – Art Journal Page – Gothic Lady (time lapse video)

This is my second video for the #LoveFallArt festival happening this weekend on YouTube!  This is organized by the Creative Arts Collaboration group and is running from September 17th to 20th.  The theme is Fall/Autumn and all you have to do is type in #LoveFallArt into the YouTube search bar to see an amazing variety of artistic and creative videos made specifically for this event.

I love art with a gothic theme.  Since we are heading into autumn and Halloween, I took this chance to make this art journal page.  I found the image of the shrouded woman in a magazine and have been waiting to use it.  I chose to do this page on a loose sheet because of its size.  The loose pages can be bound later into a book.

Thanks for watching!

art journal page – aromatherapy (journal52)

aromatherapy4This prompt for week 8 of Journal52 was another challenge for me!  It was done on a small scale in my Moleskine 3 1/2 ” x 5 1/2″ journal book.  The paper is rather thin and can’t take a lot of media on them so this page was basic and quick.  I started painting with three colours, purple, pink and white and blending them together.

aromatherapy1  Next I cut out the flowers from book pages using a Tim Holtz die cut.  I adhered these down the Golden Regular Gel.

aromatherapy2The doodling was next.  I drew the stems and leaves and outlined the flowers with black and white.

aromatherapy3I finished up the tiny page with stickles in the middle of the flowers and drawing the border.

aromatherapy4This page was a practice in powering through.  Even though you don’t connect with a prompt, doing a journal page anyway keeps you practicing your craft!

art journal page – everyday is another chance (journal52)

everyday is another chance 2Week 4 of Journal52 is “Silhouettes”.  I loved this prompt!  I have to admit though that this page started out completely differently and ended in disaster.  Thank goodness for gesso!  That disaster is hiding underneath these layers….like it never happened!  At least it created some texture!

I started this page by stamping a script background stamp on white tissue paper.  I crumpled up the tissue paper before I glued it down onto the page with Golden Soft Gel (Matte) medium.  This made some nice wrinkles on the page.  Next came paint splatters (one of my favourite things to do).

everyday is another chanceI cut out the flowers in black cardstock using Tim Holtz’s Alterations “Tattered Florals” die cut and glued them on with Golden Soft Gel (Matte) medium.  I stamped the sentiment on white cardstock and glued that on with Aleene’s Tacky glue.

everyday is another chance 1The final touches were to outline the sentiment with black and the flowers with white.  I added pink Stickles in the middle of the flowers for a little sparkle and put the black border around the page.

everyday is another chance 4This was a great prompt and you could come up with so many ideas!  Even after my initial disaster (which is why it took me so long to get this one finished) I’m happy with the results.

Thanks for having a look and please share or leave a comment below.  Would love to hear from you!

art journal page – be messy (journal52)

be messy 6This art journal page is my submission for Week 2 “Just Be” for Journal 52.  I have to admit that this was not my first attempt at this week’s prompt.  I had made another page that started with an image transfer but my layers just kept getting worse and worse as I went along.  Needless to say, that page didn’t make the cut.  This page is in my Moleskine watercolour journal and all I wanted to do was just be free to make a mess!  At the same time, I wanted to practice my layering techniques.  I find I’m most attracted to art journal pages that have lots of paint and collage layers…the busier the better!  I love to look at the details on each page.  This page was inspired by Donna Downey and her techniques that she posts on her YouTube channel.  She has a great way of freely brushing on paint and mixing colours together so I wanted to give it a shot.

be messy 1   I only used inexpensive craft paints for the first layer because they are more fluid than my Basics acrylic paints.  I wanted to spread a generous amount of paint onto the page just using my fingers.  I mixed the teal and purple colours alternately with white to spread it around.

be messy 2I added the melon colour next using the same technique, spreading it around with my fingers and mixing in some white.

be messy 4For the next layer I stamped on pink paint with bubble wrap and purple archival ink using a Tim Holtz circular stamp.

be messy 5I added Smash tape to help mute the background for the focal image and sentiment.  Without the tape, these would get lost on the page.  It helps them to stand out a bit more.

be messy 6I pulled the stamped image out of my stash.  I had painted it a few months ago to practice with some of my paints and brushes.  The colours worked out perfectly with the page so it has found a home!  The sentiment is stamped on Tim Holtz’s ticket strip die cut and coloured with Distress Inks.

be messy 7  I really enjoyed making this page.  It went fairly quickly (I rarely finish a page in one day).  This page felt a little freer and more relaxed than my previous pages.  I’m trying to get it out of my head that every page needs to be a work of “art”.  Just play….and be messy!!
